Cleanup in the User Database

Now we have executed a real cleanup in the user database removing all unused accounts and also accounts that looks like they are not created for personal use. All the accounts that we have identified have now been deleted and removed releasing something like ~24 000 accounts. Accounts left on the server is the actual users that we support 🙂

Jabber.Org under attack

We have been notified that we might have some users participating in a DDOS attack against jabber.org and we have therefore been blocked towards their server. Investigations on the accounts involved is being done and we will resume normal service when that is fixed.

Please also see this info: http://mail.jabber.org/pipermail/operators/2014-February/002205.html

Updates will be posted when normal service is resumed.

Updates

It har been a while since we blocked new registrations to the server (due to spam/bot attack). We will now purge old unused accounts to clean up the user database. Any unused account the last 3 months will be cleaned out, so if you havent logged on for a while, now it the time to do it! 🙂

Remember that you can still get a new account if you send an IM to stian@jabber.no, stian@barmen.nu or email to stian@barmen.nu. This will be a manual process so please be patient and also remember to put in your preferred account username + an alternative or two.

We are also working to migrate to a new solution for user regitration and account management. We might move the whole server onto a new plattform for Jabber Norge, but before we do that we will do some testing with our recently acquired domain jabber.im. Stay tuned for that 🙂

Updates

Stay tuned 🙂

Registrations (maybe) moved to WordPress

I have been trying to migrate authentication to the WordPress user database as source. This already works in my test setup and I will do some trial of migration of users accounts before we try to implement this on the live server. The upside with having accounts in WordPress is that we have the opportunity to establish a forum and community in a much smoother way. Then all users could help each other more than today, and user guides and inputs will be more “alive”. The goal with the change are different, one part is the collaboration part, the second part is to get a more robust user registration and password reset system through the wordpress framework.

There are also some downsides, for instance that the profile in WordPress and Ejabberd are not synchronized. This means that changing your Name or other profile settings in WordPress will not be updated in the Jabber profile and vice versa. To get that to work we need to greate a sync of the profiles and that is currently not in scope, though very feasable since they both use the same MySQL DB backend server.

I will update when I know more, so still we have a situation where we only use manual registrations. 🙂
